OVERVIEW

Day 1 - On the trail of the San (Bushman)

We depart Cape Town early, our destination the modern-day home of a century-old society and culture, the Bushmen or San. Our journey takes us along the Cape West Coast - where magical cuisine and local hospitality bumps up against the salty waters of the Atlantic. We visit the unique !Khwa ttu San (Bushman) cultural center and can choose between three cycle options [ranging from easy to challenging]. Our expert San Guide takes us on an unforgettable three-hour tour where we get up close to the Cape Floral Kingdom, its beauty and diversity. We learn about San history and the present day challenges facing one of the African Continent's most fascinating minority cultures. The cycle also sets the stage for a gourmet lunch not to be missed!
After lunch we embark on a gentle downhill ride through the reserve towards the quaint coastal village of Yzerfontein. Look out for zebra, eland and springbok, to name just a few of the plains animals that share this pristine landscape with us. The white beaches just outside of Yzerfontein welcome us as we near the end of our day's activities. Enjoy a glass of bubbly, with the imposing outline of Table Mountain and Cape Town on the horizon, framing a perfect photo opportunity. From here it's a short drive to the quaint seaside village of Paternoster.

Paternoster, meaning "Our Father" derives its name from the prayers of ship-wrecked Portuguese sailors. Visitors to Paternoster delight in watching whales and dolphins frolicking in the ocean (ten months of the year).  After the first spring rains, the landscape is transformed by the millions of indigenous flowers which open and densely carpet the earth in bright bursts of color (usually between late July and September). For bird lovers, Paternoster is home to over 250 species of birds with seabirds (Seagulls, cormorants, sacred ibis and the Oystercatcher) using this coastline as their breeding ground.

After checking in at our lovely accommodations, there is time to relax before we meet for a special West Coast dinner.

Day 2 - Paternoster

After a sumptuous breakfast we embark on the morning's cycle. We ride along the beautiful coast line to reach the Cape Columbine lighthouse which was the last manned lighthouse built in South Africa in 1936.  We continue to the nearby West Coast Fossil Park and explore the area on foot. The afternoon program is free with optional activities: sea kayaking (weather permitting), shuttle to nearby Darling for wine tasting, or walk the endless beach.  We meet again for a well-deserved gourmet dinner. Overnight in Paternoster.

Day 3 - A special treat and game viewing

The first activity for the early risers is a sunrise paddle in the bay (weather permitting) or a beach walk. Simply the best way to start your day! At 9:00 am we gather for a special treat at one of Paternoster's famous chef's home for a truly indulgent breakfast.

We transfer to a nearby private game reserve where we have scouted an exclusive cycle route. We are met by our specialist ranger guide and back-up vehicle, and after learning about the fauna and flora in the reserve, we hop onto our trusty bikes and the adventure begins! We may get up close to a variety of antelope and plains game, including zebra, giraffe, oryx, wildebeest, kudu, eland, springbok and we can visit the cheetah and lion enclosures to marvel at these mighty cats! Not only does cycling ensure a more intimate experience, it allows us to get closer to nature than we ever expected and makes for amazing wildlife viewing!  We have a light lunch before we shuttle back to Cape Town where the tour ends upon arrival.
